Sagrada Familia

There is one building in Barcelona, which everyone must see! It is just phenomenal and one of a kind in the world, not only because its construction began in 1882, and never got completed. Its construction, expansion and reconstruction goes on at the same time ...

Sagrada Família, more precisely Reconciliation Temple of the Holy Family – an Art Nouveau church - today of the status of a minor basilica, is considered the main achievement of the designer Anthony Gaudí.

Gaudí  gave the  project his own unique style. Over four decades, he worked extensively on the design devoting it entirely last 15 years of his life. During the work, he continually adapted and changed the original assumptions of the project.

The towers of the church got completed in 1920. Six years later, the architect died , bumping into a passing tram, leaving only one of the three designed facades. Due to the organic form of the building and the uniqueness of the architectural details (such as in nature none of them is identical and must be separately carved) they have still not been able to finish it. The projects of the temple left by the architect got destroyed during the Spanish Civil War by the Catalan anarchists.

November 7, 2010 on a Sunday during a solemn Mass which was attended by 62 thousand people, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the Temple of the Holy Family ( Sagrada Familia ) raising it to the dignity of a minor basilica.
