Silesia = coal mines

Our plan to explore Katowice and Silesian cities included, in addition to cultural events, visits to art museums and museums of the realities of this region - mines.

The Silesian Museum in Katowice, famous for its magnificent works of contemporary Polish painting, was a so-called necessity to be there.

People plan, and someone else decides...

Unfortunately, the permanent exhibition of paintings in the Silesian Museum, which interested us, is closed... until further notice!

The reason is the hydraulic and thermal insulation works and the paintings must be protected.

For now, they are protected from us!

We were left with a visit to the Historic Guido Mine in Zabrze.

After almost an hour's bus journey from Katowice to Zabrze, we reached the mine, where coal has not been extracted for 20 years, and since 2007 it has been a museum.

The descent in the miners' elevator to a depth of 340m (to the lowest mine accessible to tourists) is an attraction in itself.

The photos will have to suffice for you, because the story about this place told by the guide would take up too much space here!

One thing has been confirmed for sure:

Despite great technological advances in the process of coal mining, the work of a miner is unimaginably hard.

We all know that, but being underground this awareness is even more painful.
