Szczecin - a seaport on the Oder River
A warm day in the second half of September encouraged me to take a walk around Szczecin.
It's been a while since I've blogged about our city, so it's time to share what's happened here in the last decade to bring the city closer to the Oder River.
I'm walking a distance of about 1 km, from the northern end of Piastowski Boulevard, where the underground entrance to the Polish Theatre is located, to the Long Bridge.
I'm walking south along the western bank of the Oder, photographing views on both sides.
This is what Kamila Bednarska and Asia Karwik, second-year students at the University of Technology and Rural Development wrote in 2016:
"The Piastowski Boulevard in Szczecin is an interesting recreational area located on the Oder River in the city center. It begins at the exit from the Castle Route and ends behind the Long Bridge. It is 909.5 meters long and includes the Sailors' Avenue.
The Sailors' Avenue reminds us of great maritime expeditions and of people connected with the sea. (...)
The Oder boulevards are a recent investment by the Szczecin authorities; the project is a success and has been quite successful. The project has literally brought Szczecin closer to the water, and both residents and tourists enjoy strolling along the Boulevard."
For a decade, the western Odra boulevard has blended into Szczecin's cityscape, but Jana z Kola Street, a freeway, effectively separates the city from the river and makes access to this part of the city difficult.
We await the city's western bypass (under construction), which will take away all the heavy traffic.
This is what Piastowski Boulevard looks like on a cloudy Friday morning.
