An evening at the theater

To end a beautiful Sunday, we were at the Polish Theatre for Adrianna Szymańska's monodrama "Kora – Child of the Sun."

From the Theatre's website:

"A musical tale of Kora, a charismatic artist, singer, lyricist, and painter. She was described as an eternal hippie and rock poet. The stage was her element, where she transformed like a chameleon – one moment fierce, the next lyrical. With the group Maanam, she released a multitude of hits that have become a permanent part of the canon of Polish pop music. In the 1980s, she became an idol for the masses, a star unlike any other in Polish show business.
Kora passed away in 2018."

Daniel Źródlewski writes about the performance in "tekstyzrodlowe.pl":

"Adrianna Szymańska doesn't try to imitate Kora. She doesn't try to replicate gestures, movements, gazes, grimaces, or mannerisms of speaking (...). Adrianna Szymańska simply understands and feels Kora.

This was enough to believe every word spoken by the character, despite the lack of staging. From the very first minutes of the performance, it's clear how much work she put into achieving this effect. You can feel the director's complete trust in the actress, and vice versa. It's complete abandon, with the same control and distance from everything she says and does in the role (...). The effect she achieved is close to a laboratory, but one that examines the soul, not the body (and it's not a church).

Szymańska's vocal performance deserves special recognition. It's also delightful. Each of her songs, thanks also to the unique arrangement, is once again a complete masterpiece. The actress changes the timbre of her voice, form, and style to suit her individual needs. the proverbial "snap." When needed, she's delicate and tender, when needed, fierce. Dreamlike, melancholic, and the next moment, unwittingly surrendered to the vibrations of rock sound. (...) Every word resonates here, and each is understandable (!). Bravo!

We fully endorse this opinion. We left the theater moved...
