First Cairo impressions

Our hotel (accommodating over 1,000 guests) is located in Giza, on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Cairo. In 2006, the city had a population of approximately 3.1 million, making it the third largest in the country. It is part of the Cairo metropolitan area. Cairo, in turn, has a population of over 20 million, and with tourists and Egyptians commuting to study and work, this number reaches 30 million!

We’re going to see the impressive ancient structures of Giza another day.

Today we cover 8 km to the center of Cairo.

It's Friday – the beginning of the Muslim weekend, so traffic jams in the city are slightly lighter, but that doesn't mean our bus is moving quickly.

Today, some photos of the city, including the City of the Dead, several mosques, and the bustle around the old bazaar.

"The City of the Dead is a former necropolis that has also become a residential area of Cairo. Or rather, a gigantic slum where nearly 500,000 of Cairo's poorest live among the gravesoften without electricity, running water, or other amenities of the modern world. But before that, the City of the Dead was for many centuries an impressive necropolis of immense historical significance."

PS. Tourists are not allowed in this district of Cairo.
