Residential architecture in Andalusia

Fascinated, we tour, first on the outside, our friends' beautiful modern home and ask them plenty of questions—mainly because you don't see houses like this in other parts of Europe!

Why are houses in Andalusia mainly white?

The question is obvious, but the answer is more complex:

  • the color reflects sunlight and keeps interiors cool,
  • lime disinfects and protects against germs,
  • white is a key element of the region's cultural identity.

"Contemporary architecture in Andalusia strongly embraces the 'less is more' principle. Designs by young architects (under 50) are characterized by:

  • simple forms,
  • white tones, sometimes contrasted with graphite black,
  • cool, airy spaces,
  • material recycling and artisanal detailing.

This modernity is deeply rooted in the region's climate-responsive traditions."

Regarding Joti and Carlos’s home: read my quotea and look at the photos to see if the house’s exterior matches Andalusian modernity and the tradition.

"The architecture of contemporary villas in Andalusia is a fascinating blend of minimalism, climate-conscious design, local materials, the tradition of white, and bold, 'sculptural' gestures. It is one of the most distinctive styles in Europe—and vastly different from what we see in Poland."
