Festival, fears and local life

Local holidays, fairs, and festivals bring great joy to residents, while tourists get to discover local customs and pastimes, immersing themselves in the local culture.

We had the opportunity to attend the opening of the "Real Feria de San Miguel 2026" (Royal San Miguel Fair 2026—the main fair and patronal festival), an event held in the neighboring municipality that includes Torre del Mar, running from September 29 to October 4, 2026.

“Who is Saint Michael? This archangel (Spanish: *San Miguel Arcángel*) is the foremost of the archangels, the commander of the heavenly hosts, and the conqueror of Satan.

  • Name: In Hebrew, it means "Who is like God?" (*Mika'el*).
  • Role: Leader of the good angels, defender of the faithful in the battle against evil, and guardian of human souls at the hour of death.
  • Attributes: Depicted in armor, wielding a sword or spear, and often shown trampling a dragon or Satan.
  • Patronage: Protector of the Catholic Church, soldiers, police officers, and goldsmiths; also the patron saint of a good death.”

Without going into too much detail, it is clear that the colorful fair, the amusement park, and the abundance of hot food stalls demonstrate just how essential such events are for fostering community cohesion, upholding traditions, and supporting the local economy. Tourists are fascinated by the amateur performances given by local groups. We watched group performances of *sevillanas*—the most popular traditional folk dance from Andalusia, closely linked to flamenco culture.

One of the scheduled events was the selection of a "Child Miss/Mister." We didn't stay to hear the results, nor did we wait for the "Youth Miss/Mister" contest.

It must have been a significant moment and experience for the children's parents.

Competition in life begins at a very early age!
