Caravaggio

Life of Michelangelo Merisiego called CARAVAGGIO has been described in many books and a scandalous film was shot.

His life and work intrigues and inspires many artists. A casual tourists simply rave about his paintings  which, although were created at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to this day are considered to be brilliant.

We saw a few of the paintings in Roman museums, but the most impressive of them  are available in the churches.

Take a look at a few pictures. What a pity that I cannot recall what we heard from Olaf - it was a long story full of very important interpretations of the details of those canvases.

Here just a few words:

Triptych: Calling of Saint Matthew, Inspiration of Saint Matthew, the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew

are in the chapel Contarelli  inthe church of San Luigi dei Francesi.

Feature: The biggest success of Caravaggio’s.

Painting: St. John the Baptist - is in the pinacotheca on the Capitol Hill.

Feature: Following Michelangelo - introducing naturalistic nature.

Painting: The Crucifixion of St. Peter - in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo.

Feature: Large format and remarkable realism.

Painting: The Conversion of St. Paul - also in Santa Maria del Popolo.

Feature: The contrast between the  salvation light and the sin darkness.

Painting: Madonna of Loreto - in the church of Sant'Agostino.

Feature: The extraordinary harmony due to the light.

Paining: David with the Head of Goliath – The  Borghese Gallery.

Feature: The  triumphator is sad, the  victim full of pride and vanity (this is a self-portrait of the

               artist).
