Monte Gianicolo

The Gianicolo in Trastevere used to play a major role in the defense system of the city. That's why there are statues of Giuseppe Garibaldi and his wife Anita Garibaldi.

The Gianicolo currently serves as a popular place for walks. For many tourists the view of the city allows them to check their knowledge of the topography of Rome and recognize individual palaces, churches and historic buildings.

We passed the test – Olaf said!

It is  the Gianicolo where  a masterpiece of Renaissance – Tempietto – was build. It is a small temple on a circle plan.  The creator - Bramante - was inspired by the early Christian chapels built in the places of the martyrdom of the saints.

This very harmonious temple is the first truly Renaissance building of Rome.
