Phnom Penh revisited

Those interested could refer to the  entries on Cambodia in our blog in 2013.

Now we are observing  tremendous progress in Phnom Penh in the appearance of the city and of the increasing economy of Cambodia.

We are  visiting the city, a silkworm plantation, a street Chinese restaurant where we could see noodles being made by hand,  and a busy daily life of the capital.

A quote first: “Phnom Pen, Khmer pronunciation: [pʰnum peɲ]), formerly known as Chaktomuk is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh has been the national capital since French colonization of Cambodia, and has grown to become the nation's centre of economic and industrial activities, as well as the centre of security, politics, cultural heritage, and diplomacy of Cambodia.

Situated on the banks of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, the Phnom Penh metropolitan area is home to about 1.5 million of Cambodia's population of over 14.8 million.”

Tuk-tuks carry us for the city tour, emerged in a huge motorbike and car traffic, whose rules no European driver could possibly ever understand. Our drivers are attentive, reliable and efficient; we get to an island in the Mekong River backwater, only slightly poisoned with the fumes. There’s a communal cooperative - a silkworm plantation.

Some of us want to watch the production of silk, the others just want to buy silk scarves. Most of us did, of course. The scarves.
