Canberra - The Nation's Capital

It took bearly four hours by bus to get here yeasterday, 05th of Janauary.

A surprise nr 7 in the capital of Australia: It turned out that in that city of 300 thousand people all shops and businesses close down at 5 pm and we couldn't buy a power point adaptor for our plugs to be able to work on our computer.

Another little surprise nr 7a: Our hotel wanted to charge us AUSD 7 per hour or 17 per day for the Internet connection (In Asian countries hotels provide it for free!) We used nearby McDonald's Internet for free.

Today, since early morning we have ambisiously been visiting The Old and New Parliament  Buildings and The Australian War Memorial. Australia was involved in both World Wars in which tens of thousands Australians were killed.

The sightseeng meant covering long distances walking.

Canberra was chosen for the capital as a result of a rivarly between Melbourne and Sydney in 1908. Not until 1927 did the Parliament start its functions. Today the builduing is called the Old Parliament.

Since 1988 the New Parliamnet has been in function, located on a hill above the old one. The architecture was beautifully designed to match the surrouning green area.
