Day eight. On the beach!

Despite the heavy clouds in the sky and not too high temperature in the city on Sunday and Monday, we trusted the extremely optimistic weather forecast and booked a room for one night on Fire Island* specifically in Fire Island Pines.

Here a small curiosity: the name of the island comes from the Dutch times, when it was called vier (fourth), and English speakers heard fire!).

Why did we choose this island? I was here 23 years ago and I wanted Adek to see this geographical and sociological phenomenon.

We enjoy such ambiance:

“Fire Island Pines along with the adjoining Cherry Grove, are the areas most strongly associated with the gay community on Fire Island. The island has been referred to as America’s first gay and lesbian town and served since the 1920s and 1930s as a refuge for vacationers and others who desired the more liberal attitude the island's occupants allowed.”

A cloudy and cold morning at 6:00 did not bode well. After arriving on the island (it took 4 hours by subway, train, bus and ferry!) the sun began to warm up for good. The beach was empty because the season was over, but the ocean didn't care and it was buzzing with the full force of its waves.

*Fire Island is the large centre island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of the mainland of Long Island. The island is approximately 31 miles (50 km) long and varies between 520 and 1,310 feet (160 and 400 m) wide.
