San Francisco - The Castro

We went to a meeting with a San Francisco writer and intelectual - Ron Schmidt. Agata S., Terenia's nice was our guide.

Ronald Schmidt has for many years been a militant activist in LGBT (Lesibian Gay Bisexual Trangender).

The book of his life is "Once-Removed". A story about really relevant problems in the life of homosexuals in socially advanced societies.

The elderly gentelman took us around The Castro neighbourhood, telling us about its history. And then he showed us impressive Victorian houses in other parts of the city.

'The Castro District, commonly referenced as The Castro, is a neighborhood in Eureka Valley in San Francisco, California. The Castro is one of the United States' first and best-known gay neighborhoods, and it is currently its largest. Having transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s, the Castro remains a symbol and source of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism and events.'

In The Castro Harvey Milk played a very important role:

'Harvey Bernard Milk (born May 22, 1930 – assesinated November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Politics and gay activism were not his early interests; he was not open about his homosexuality and did not participate in civic matters until around the age of 40, after his experiences in the counterculture of the 1960s.'
