About Dziwnów and the Dziwna River - The Strange River

Before we experience the charms of the town and the river - I invite you to a short reading:

"Dziwnów (German: Dievenow) - a city in north-western Poland, on the Baltic Sea, in the province of Zachodniopomorskie, in the district of Kamień, the seat of the urban-rural commune of Dziwnów. A holiday resort with a summer sea bathing area and a seaport.

According to data from December 31, 2013, the city had 2,736 inhabitants.

Dziwnów is located in the central part of the coast of the province. Zachodniopomorskie, in the northern part of the Kamień County. The city is located on the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Dziwna Strait to the sea. From the south, the city lies on the Kamień Lagoon and the Wrzosowska Bay, which are part of the Dziwna River. The town is located on the Szczecin Coast, the western part on the Międzywodzki Peninsula on the Wolin Island, and the eastern part on the spit belonging to the Trzebiatowskie Coast mesoregion.

Dziwna (the Strange River) is the easternmost strait connecting the waters of the Szczecin Lagoon with the Baltic Sea.

The Strange is colloquially called a river because its current is clearly marked. In addition, it discharges the waters of the Odra River to the Baltic Sea, similarly to the two larger straits: Świna and Piana. Geographically, it is precisely the strait. It also owes its "strange" name to the phenomenon of the so-called backwash. The directions of the tides change at different times of the year. In spring there is an outflow of waters. In other seasons, the north-west winds may cause inflow of waters from the Pomeranian Bay, i.e. the backwater. It happens that the water from the Baltic Sea goes all the way to the town of Widuchowa, located more than 100 km from the sea. This means that anglers can catch both river roach and perch, as well as sea flounder and cod. In the waters of the strait, apart from freshwater plants, there are also halophilous plants."
