Heraklion - the capital of Crete

Heraklion, also Iraklion (Greek: IIraklio) - the largest city and administrative capital of Crete and the capital of the Heraklion regional unit. The fifth largest city in Greece with 200,000 inhabitants.

Heraklion was the fastest growing tourist destination in Europe in 2017. According to the ranking, the city was the 19th most visited region in Europe for 2018, with 3.4 million visitors. "

We experienced this today when we went to explore the city 25 km away from our hotel in Hersonissos.

Local buses operate efficiently in the region and are very comfortable. It would be a mistake to rent a car as there is no chance of finding a parking space in the city.

To our surprise on October 6, crowds (!) of tourists were passing through the tourist spots of Heraklion, and most of the cafés, bars and restaurants were full at lunchtime.

A tour of the city on a tourist train (approx. 60 min.) showed that the city has little to offer other than a wonderful port, a few historical monuments and two important museums.

As far as the commercial part is concerned - it’s the same as in any other European city! No worth mentioning.

Note: Tomorrow part three of the myths will be published! Hold your impatience!
