Drag in the Gierek era

So, we head to the "Drag Theater" to finally enjoy some great art!

We have to cross the Dębnicki Bridge and walk along the Vistula River to a pink barge moored at the Father Bernatek Footbridge.

The name of the barge, "Slay Space," is difficult to translate because it's English-speaking youth slang. In Polish, perhaps it's "Miejsce petarda" (Firecracker Place)?

"Slay Space" is a place where a restaurant, music, performance art, drag shows, and many other forms of artistic expression combine.

It's also an  — a place created for freedom, expression, and fun, open to all who value diversity, art, and a safe atmosphere.

Today's event, "Drag Queen at Gierek's,"

is described:

"Were there any drag queens in the Polish People's Republic?

Which party were they from? Did the five-year plan also include a quota for sequins and hairspray?"

CITIZENS, MEN AND WOMEN — AFTER WORK, TIME FOR FUN

Art is close to working people, so we invite you to the premiere of "Drag Queen at Gierek's" on June 6th at 7:00 PM at Slay Space in Krakow. Theater as a tool for civic education—expect true stories about human fate set to the rhythm of the best songs from the Polish People's Republic era.

Judy Chersand and Lisandra will perform in this cabaret production by the Drag Theater collective. (…)

The absurdities of life in the Polish People's Republic, ridiculed in the performance by three performers (two drag queens and one male representative of those times authorities), are meant to make younger audiences aware that no one had it easy back then (unless those in power had it great).

In the next part of the performance, situations from the Polish People's Republic were highlighted with songs from that era. Naturally, the artists lip-synced the original performers of Polish songs.

Finally, using the same technique, the girls performed foreign hits from that period.

I consider this great entertainment a kind of cabaret, one that echoes regret (?) for the past. Is this exotic for young people?

I don’t dare judge the performance, because amateur actors are subject to different criteria, and today's artists deserve a huge round of applause.

And the pizza with giant shrimp we were served was one of the best we've ever eaten!
