Mięćmierz

One of the attractions of Kazimierz is Mięćmierz.

"Mięćmierz, sometimes Męćmierz - part of Kazimierz Dolny, on the bank of the Wisła River, 3 km south-west of the centre.

In the present times, the village is maintained as an open-air museum, thanks to thatched, ancient cottages, some of which have been moved here from other locations.

In the central part of the estate there is a shingled well, and attention is attracted by a treeline windmill*, visible from the nearby Albrechtówka mountain, moved here from Bałtów near Puławy."

A walk around this village - the neighbourhood of Kazimierz - would be a great pleasure if not a significant feature of the place: most of the old houses are in the private hands of Polish celebrities of various origins (actors, painters, politicians and others) who can afford this positive snobbery of having a country cottage as home.

The natural thing is that the owners are not too happy when hordes of tourists look into their windows. We did not like the role of an intruder ...

The exception is the large area around the windmill whose hosts (when asked) let you visit this beautiful place with an orchard, bee-garden, recreational area and a beautiful view of the river with the Cow Island and the ruins of the castle in Janowiec on the other bank.

* The Windmill Koźlak on the Wisła is one of the oldest and most numerous windmill type in Poland. Its name comes from a wooden structure supporting the construction which was turned around depending on the direction of the wind, by means of a vertical wooden pole, set in the rotating part.
