Episode 33

Taming the Life. My Talks with Adrian

Episode 33

Talk thirty two.

Oaxaca, 27th February

- Again another ADeO bus and again a night long journey!   Twelve hours from San Cristóbal to Oaxaca.

- It’s the Indian name Oaxaca, which is difficult to pronounce in Polish and the grammatical inflection of the noun is a real tongue twister! Oaxaca is a capital and the name of the state. Did you like the service and basically that form of travelling by bus which in Mexico is called „de lujo" (luxury)?

- I really liked the interior of the bus which looked like a business class of a plane. Twenty five reclining seats making comfortable beds. We haven’t heard about such a way of travelling in Europe, have we?

- In Mexico, a lot of things work faultily but the bus transportation which in is the primary means of covering great distances between Mexican cities, is unexpectedly perfect. Always on time, clean and comfortable.

- And that's why we were able to make it for an evening of fun in Oaxaca to celebrate St. Valentine's Day.

- In Mexico, the Americanization of life is justified, because the big brother is right next door. Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated here with a great deal of humor and without rending their garments that there is that terrible American influence on the culture, at the expense of the native - Mexican tradition. Their own traditions remain unabated, and one more will not hurt.

- We found the whole city decorated with balloons, hearts and other love toys. And I like the most a guy with a big cardboard box with the words: "I give out kisses and hugs absolutely for free!"

- Additional pleasure gave me high air temperature at night, after sunny but cold days and freezing nights in San Cristóbal.

- Is the celebration of Saint Valentine's Day also your tradition?

- Not at all. Under the communism there was no question about it, and later on I somehow felt too grown-up for such fun. Today, I find it a great festivity which is particularly necessary for Poles in order to get out of the torture of all martyrdom holidays and celebrations, and introduce some optimism and joy into their life which is not always colorful.

- But Polish defenders of the great symbols of various kinds, consider that as a betrayal of sacred, for centuries, Polish traditions.

- I do not mind copying what is joyful and good for people. Unfortunately, we copy the bad habits as well.

- Get lost! I know, you have popcorn and Coca-Cola in the movies in mind.

- Because I tolerate the stink with a difficulty. I don’t understand how you, such as sensitive to smells person, doesn’t have anything against it.

- Something good must be in the stuff, since millions of people around the world eat and drink it.

- Millions of people around the world do stupid things and I don’t like it.

- Haven’t you ever done anything stupid?

- I must’ve. I fell in love with you at the first sight.

- And now you regret it, don’t you?

- Never. Many a time have I told you that after many years of difficult life, something special happened to me.   You’ve become a prize that life has given me for having been making the right choices.

- Wow! What a beautiful Valentine I’m getting from you!

- Well, you see, at the end of the conversation, you, too, have used the Americanism "Wow!" which breeds in our language.

- I’m only trying to enrich our language!
