Episode 45

Taming the Life. My Talks with Adrian

Episode 45

Talk forty four.

Washington D.C., 17th March

- Is this your first visit here in the spring?

- It’s the first time I see the biggest local attraction – the Blooming Cherry Festival.

- The spring came here earlier than usual, which turned the entire city into a beautiful orchard.

- The entire Washington is dug up! The whole area of The Mall[3] including the Washington Monument – the Obelisk is under restoration!

- Apparently it's being prepared for the next presidential inauguration in January 2013. A visit to the Capitol gave us a good amount of knowledge about the history of the United States. The Americans, as always, are proud to present their history.

- They don’t have too much of it, so they show whatever they have.

- It is worth respecting it, not making fun of it! Anyway, we are guests of Renata’s about whom we'll talk when we get back here for Easter.

- It's time to go to the South where I hope to get a little of the sunshine.

- And to learn a little bit more about the history of the United States, especially the Civil War.

- In a condensed form, I hope.

- The war lasted only four years…

- Form Rockville, Maryland where Renata lives (40 kilometers from the capital centre), we have only 850 km - eight hours at the wheel - to Charleston, South Carolina.

- It’s nothing for us and our fully equipped Ford which we rented for the coming two weeks.

- I like to think about our following trip to Zakopane, in early September 2000, as our honeymoon.

- It doesn’t really matter what we call it, it matters what we experienced there.

- The expedition to Orla Perć[4]! It was the first time in the High Tatras for me. I was completely unprepared. I had a pair of trekking shoes, not good for hiking on rocks.

- It was a total irresponsibility on my part. I'd been there before. I should have remembered that a sudden change of weather into much worse, can cause danger.

- What was dangerous, it was my fear. I was really scared. The visibility was almost zero, and the rocks were giving way under my feet.

- I trusted your youth and your overall fitness. Unfortunately, people much fitter than you are, get killed in the mountains.

- In addition, I watched with envy as Alek was jumping from one rock to another like a chamois, and he was looking at me with pity.

- It was a mistake to have decided to go to the mountains with him only since Marcin had to do a month service in the army after completing his medical studies. We should’ve been with Alek. The excuse for such a mistake was the fact that I had been with both of them in the mountains a year before, and we had a lot of fun

- Why did Alek go out with us for the hikes? He wouldn’t speak much to us or would be rude, anyway.

- I was very surprised with his behaviour and do not quite understand much of it.

- Neither do I. From my point of you, I was to blame. I thought that it was because of me.

- What was it because of you? That he was jealous?

- I thought so then.

- I thought it was Marcin who Alek would miss. I just couldn’t get why Alek would grumble at me. I just couldn’t wait for him to leave. Fortunately, he left us alone for some days.

- And we had a chance of hiking on our own on some beautiful Tatra trails. Now, we only have the Mount Rysy to climb up left.
